What quality of yours makes you best suited for what you do?

When we attempt to solve a problem for a client, I try to look at things from the client's perspective. I then get the input of the entire team and put together a solution. I think a quality that allows me to do my job well is my ability to take into account several different factors and solve a problem in a way that is in the client's best interest.

What is your favorite place in Utah?

Although there are many fantastic places to visit in Utah, the one that probably carries the most meaning for my family is Thanksgiving Point, which is right down the street from my house. All three of my kids have spent a large portion of their childhood there.

What is the best gift you've ever received?

One year for my birthday, my wife spent a ton of time and effort putting together a book of pictures and letters from friends and family. It meant a lot, and I still pull it out when I need a little confidence boost.

What personal accomplishments are you most proud of?

Being a husband and father.

What are some things you most enjoy helping clients with?

I'm passionate about helping clients with their charitable giving. It is fun to see how generous our clients are, and I get a lot of satisfaction from assisting them in giving in efficient ways.

What is something about yourself that surprises people when they first learn it about you?

I don't know if it surprises people or annoys them, but I pretty much always find a way to relate day-to-day life to the show Seinfeld.

Do you have a favorite lesson you've learned about investing/life?

In investing and life, there are things we can control and things we can't. I think happiness comes when we let go of those things that we can't control.

What quality of yours makes you best suited for what you do?

My ability to be relentlessly thorough in my follow-up with clients and prospects makes me good at my job. I get excited when I have the chance to help people be better off financially. That fuels me to help clients find and solve their problems and face a constant sea of rejection.

My backyard. I love cooking something on the grill in the summertime while my two sons run around and play. The yard also has a lovely view of Mt. Timpanogos.

What is the best gift you've ever received?

The best gift I ever received was when my wife Heidi gave me two beautiful sons, Camden and McCoy (and hopefully more to come). My second favorite has to be the Nintendo 64 my parents got for my brothers and me for Christmas of 1998.

After interning for over two years, Roger, Andy, and Darren offered me a full-time advisor position at Merrill Financial. I will never forget that emotional phone call to my wife.

What is something about yourself that surprises people when they first learn it about you?

I enjoy musical theater more than most. My father was a theater professor/director at BYU for 30 years, so I grew up going to plays and listening to show tunes. My music preferences are a slight annoyance to my wife on road trips.

Do you have a favorite lesson you've learned about investing/life?

If ever we let our emotions get to us with the stock market, or we want to make a rash decision with our investments, try to ask the question, "Is this decision born out of patience or impatience?" The answer helps to know whether wealth is being transferred to you or somebody else who is more patient.
